Filmmaker Ritesh Batra from Mumbai has done India proud. After finishing his film Our Souls at Night, with Hollywood biggies Robert Redford and Jane Fonda, he has been named by the Variety magazine in its list of ten directors to watch out for series.
Ritesh gets this honour for his film, The Sense of an Ending, that has British performing stars Jim Broadbent (Gangs of New York, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Moulin Rouge) and Charlotte Rampling (The Verdict, Aberdeen and Vanishing Point) in the lead. Ritesh shot to fame with The Lunchbox (2013) starring Irrfan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Nimrat Kaur.
Variety has selected the directors for 2016, marking the 20th anniversary of a talent-hunting effort that had earlier spotted filmmakers like Christopher Nolan, Wes Anderson, Alfonso Cuaron, Alejandro Gonzáles Iñárritu, and Taika Waititi long before they were household names.
The top ten directors will be profiled in a special standalone issue of Variety on January 3 and on that very day they will be felicitated at the Palm Springs Film Festival.
