The Dawood effect: Sunil Grover refuses to promote his film Coffee With D

Now, there’s some bad news for all Sunil Grover fans. His Coffee With D scheduled to be the first Hindi film to hit the screens this year  has landed in trouble with its makers alleging that they have been receiving threat calls for showing underworld don Dawood Ibrahim in poor light. Director Vishal Mishra and producer Vinod Ramani alleged that they were getting calls since December 14, 2016, from different numbers and locations. They approached the Parliament Street Police Station in New Delhi to lodge a complaint. Coffee With D is slated to release on January 6.

And to make matters worse, Grover, much to the dismay of the makers, has opted out of the promotion of the film. He also added on Twitter that he was not party to the complaint lodged at the police station. Grover also refused to promote the film on comedian Kapil Sharma’s show on TV (which Grover is also a part of as Dr. Mashoor Gulati).

Reacting to Grover’s decision, producer Ramani says, “We are guessing that the Real D has compelled Sunil to go underground and not stand by what needs to be done. Matters do get a little sensitive when such a thing happens. We still have the highest regard for him as an actor but it is very sad to have the lead actor of our film refusing to promote the film at such an hour. He has put all the film’s promotions in jeopardy, including the Kapil Sharma show integration for the film.”

However, according to some media reports, it was Sharma who at the last minute cancelled the promotion of Grover’s film on his show. Now, the question is: Did Sharma take the step on the insistence of Grover? Well, the actor, no doubt has left his makers in a tight situation with his actions. What is the point promoting a film if its lead actor is missing?
