Festivals in India have a strong connection with Bollywood. And Rahul Dholakia’s Raees starring Shah Rukh Khan and Mahira Khan is no exception. To celebrate Makar Sankranti,  Shah Rukh Khan will be seen enjoying the occasion in the film with the song Udi Udi. It has been conceived to celebrate the festival. For the first time the actor will be seen doing Garba on screen! The number scored by Ram Sampath and written by Javed Akhtar, has been sung by Sukhwinder Singh, Bhoomi Trivedi and Karsan Sagathia. Makar Sankranti falls on January 14 this year.

Director Rahul Dholakia, a Gujarati by birth, says, “Uttran is one of the biggest festivals in Gujarat and Garba is our state dance! No film rooted in Gujarat can be complete without having either of them. A majority of the writers were Gujaratis and we decided to incorporate a special song which also takes the story forward.” In fact, SRK plays a Gujarati don Raees Alam in the film.

Dholakia adds that a special manja (thread) was brought from Surat for the number. “SRK’s character in the film loves to fly kites and is an expert at cutting other people’s kites.  There is a dialogue in the film where Shah Rukh says, ‘Agar Katne k darr hota na, toh patang nahi chadhata, firki pakadta.’ To give the authenticity to the character we decided to use Surti manja which is razor sharp. A couple of times during the shoot he actually cut his fingers,” Dholakia says.

In fact, Shah Rukh also has plans to celebrate the festival on the terrace of his Mumbai bungalow, Mannat on Saturday. Sources say, that the superstar will also participate in a kite flying competition for the occasion.

A source says, “The preparations are underway. His residence is also the perfect location to fly kites, owing to an open sea view and strong wind, which attracts many people to fly kites.”
