Is Naam Shabana inspired from a true story?

Taapsee Pannu in Naam Shabana

The buzz in Bollywood is that Neeraj Pandey’s forthcoming production Naam Shabana with Taapsee Pannu in the title role is actually based on a real-life story of a lady of the same name. Neeraj has also written the story of the film. Female Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) agents are hired for special assignments and some are even used as honey traps to deceive the enemy. Sources close to the unit say that Naam Shabana is the story of one woman who has been part of  such a mission. Those who know the story are of the view that former RAW agents will relate to Shabana’s character.

It wouldn’t be surprising, if that is the truth, since Neeraj has a penchant for stories inspired from real life, be it A Wednesday, MS Dhoni-The Untold Story or Rustom, which are all takes on some real character or the other. Naam Shabana is directed by Shivam Nair and it also marks India’s first spin off based character on Tapsee’s character from Baby. The film also stars Akshay Kumar in a cameo, Malayalam actor, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Danny Denzongpa, Manoj Bajpayee and others and releases on March 31.
