Rajkummar Rao plays a terrorist in Hansal Mehta’s next

Rajkummar Rao as Omar Shaikh

Versatile actor Rajkummar Rao, has teamed up with director Hansal Mehta for the latter’s upcoming Omerta. Rajkummar plays Omar Sheikh, a British terrorist of Pakistani origin in the film. Sheikh who has been sentenced to death on charges of killing The Wall Street Journal’s reporter Daniel Pearl, is currently lodged in a prison in Pakistan. The actor-director duo has earlier worked in Shahid, Citylights and Aligarh.

Sheikh, who was released by India to save the lives of the passengers of the hijacked IC-814 in 2000, tried to commit suicide three years ago in a jail in Hyderabad, Pakistan. The film is based on a story written by actor Mukul Dev. Says Rao, “It’s a complete contrast to what I did in Shahid. I play the anti-hero here. I’ve tried my best to make this character as real as possible. I even stayed in London for a while to get the hang of his way of life. The character is extremely cold and aloof and it was a challenge to convince myself as an actor to believe in his convictions.”
