If you have a strong content to lure the audiences, the film is bound to do well. And the latest example is Phillauri which is on its way to becoming a profitable venture for actress-turned-producer Anushka Sharma and her brother Karnesh’s Clean Slate Films. Budgeted at Rs 21 crore, the film opened to Rs 15.25 cr weekend in India. The producers had already recovered Rs 12 crore from the satellite and music rights before the release, leaving them with only Rs 9 crore to recover. The overall Indian box-office collection in the release week has been Rs 22.68 crore and the international earnings have been Rs 7.7 crore (just the opening weekend number).
The film which has Anushka playing a friendly ghost, has enjoyed a strong word of mouth especially in North India and it ensured that its Monday collections were at 50% of the opening day and the weekday numbers remained stable. Says Karnesh, “We are extremely happy with the response the film has been getting. At Clean Slate Films, we believe in making strong content driven films that resonate with the audience thru their unique storylines and execution. At the same time we run a tight ship with controlled budgetary outlays so as to ensure that the film delivers a good return on investment and is profitable to all its stakeholders.”
Adds Anushka, “I’m very happy with the audience response to our film- Phillauri. It is delightful that families are loving the film and watching it together making it truly a – fun, family entertainer which was always our endeavour. I have loved being a part of this journey right from the script stage to its post-production and final release. I feel blessed that our efforts are resonating with the audience.”
Clean Slate Films’ debut venture NH10 was a box-office success too earning Rs 32 crore in the domestic market, and now with Phillauri, it has once again proved that a strong storyline with aggressive marketing can reap you benefits at the box-office. Phillauri starring Anushka and Diljit Dosanjh in the lead is directed by Anshai Lal.
